Highlights of this cruise:
Auckland’s waterside location has fostered the locals’ love affair with the sea, and has earned itself the nickname “the City of Sails”. With more boats per capita than any other country in the world, it truly is a water lover’s paradise.
Akaroa is a charming historic fishing village on Banks Peninsula in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is 82 kilometers by road from Christchurch. Set on a beautiful, sheltered harbor and overlooked by craggy volcanic hills, Akaroa is a popular resort town.
Many Hector's Dolphins may be found in the harbor, and 'swim with the dolphins' boat tours are a major tourist attraction. Other popular activities include harbor cruises, seal and penguin colony tours, walking, water sports and sailing.
Stewart Island, the southern-most island of New Zealand, shows as a dot on the map (if it appears at all). Don't be fooled. Stewart Island is large, 64 km long, and 40 km across (at its widest point). It has a 700 km coastline, but there are only 20 km of roads!
You won't walk round the Island in a day. Even ten days tramping only skirts the northern third. Few people can claim to have seen anywhere near the whole of Stewart Island.
Terrain is rugged. Stewart Island is made of granite, some of the oldest rock in New Zealand. A wide range of minerals are present, though not in commercial quantities. Tin was mined at Port Pegasus for a few years in the 1890's. There's black iron sand on some beaches, others are white with quartz or red with garnet. Most beaches are gold, sparkling in the sun. Don't bother bring a gold-pan though - it's mainly "fool's gold"!
Paterson Inlet almost cuts the Island in half. This large expanse of water is popular for boat-trips and recreational fishing and diving.
Picton is a town in the Marlborough region of New Zealand. It is near the head of Queen Charlotte Sound near the north-east corner of the South Island. Picton is the gateway to the attractions of Marlborough Sounds which is popular with outdoor and adventure lovers.
The town of Picton offers a relaxed setting with beautiful beaches, easy bush walks and a lovely climate. Along the seafront there are many cafes, restaurants and galleries to visit. The floating maritime museum and aquarium is also worth a look. For fit and active types, the Queen Charlotte track is a local attraction which can be seen on foot or mountain bike.
