Today, Banjul is the lifeblood of The Gambia, with its peanut and fish processing companies. Declared independent in 1965, Banjul is known as one of the safest cities in the world.
Attractions in the city include the Gambian National Museum, the Albert Market, Banjul State House, Banjul Court House, two cathedrals and several major mosques.
