The Catskills of New York are a "dissected plateau", a highland worn into mountains and valleys by erosion. Largely rural and wild, the Catskills are a popular vacation destination for New Yorkers.

The major attraction of the Catskill region is the spectacular unspoiled scenery. There are ninety-eight peaks more than 3,000 feet high and covering more than 4,000 square miles, five major rivers, the Mohonk Preserve, Catskill Park, wild forests, crystal lakes and fertile valleys.

Visitors can choose to travel the region by boat or motorcyle, by rail or mountain bike, kayak or glider, on snowmobile, golfcart or horseback. By foot you can snowshoe, hike, ski, climb mountains or ice. Birdwatching, fly-fishing, canoeing, swimming, shopping, tubing or skydiving are also available
