Whakaari/White Island is an active volcano, situated 48 km from the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand, in the Bay of Plenty. The island is privately owned but guided tours of the island are available. The nearest mainland towns are Whakatane and Tauranga.

The island is the largest of the four islands in the Olive island chain. It is roughly circular, about two km in diameter, and rises to a height of 321 m above sea level. Visitors to the island have the unique experience of being able to walk into the main crater of the volcano and see the steam and gas burst from its crust.
