Avalon River Cruise

Avalon River Cruise

This year I was lucky enough to take a small group away on an 8 day Avalon River Cruise from Amsterdam to Basel

September was a perfect month to be doing this as the European School holidays were over and the weather was more stable.  A constant 27 – 30 degrees was just perfect for us.

Some of my favourite highlights included the Cologne Cathedral which is well worth the visit.  This is a twin steepled gothic Cathedral right in the square so still lots to see around it as well. In Rudesheim some must sees are the Mechanical Museum, the Christmas Shop and a cable car ride over the beautiful countryside and wine region.  These 3 are all within a 2 minute walk of each other and if you have the time try and fit them all in.  Another place of interest was an excursion to the Black Forrest from Breisach, which was a paid optional trip.

Apart from the fantastic destinations, are the amazing locks you go through to get there and there are only approximately 120 people onboard so there is no queueing to get on and off.  This is a very relaxing way of seeing parts of Europe you wont see on a big ship cruise.  The main River Cruise people start with is the Amsterdam to Budapest (14 night) or visa versa, however we had already done this the previous year so this 8 day option was just perfect this time.

Wine and Beer is included with lunches and dinners (we managed to stretch these out for a little longer) and all day tea, coffee and water.  Avalon also include one tour each day, usually in the morning, that involves a walking tour of the city and then you are free to explore yourselves in the afternoon or take up one of the optional excursions that you pay additional for.  The rooms are the only cabins on the river that have the beds facing the water, which is great if you want a relaxing afternoon watching the world go by.  The bathrooms are spacious with the lovely locitane products available in the shower and bathroom.

So if you want to know more about River Cruising I have also travelled on Scenic and Carolyn has been away with APT.  We can help you with any of the many other River Cruising options available to you.  There are quite a few different itineraries available and it is important that you speak to someone who can give you the information you need to make an informed decision on which option is right for you.  We would be pleased to help you so call us on 09 416 1799.
