GANNET SAFARIS OVERLAND
Embark on a world class three hour experience to Cape
Kidnappers Gannet colony, the largest accessible colony
in the world where there are over 20,000 birds. Based
in the wonderful community of Te Awanga, the team of
enthusiastic local guides play host to over 7000 visitors
during the birds’ nesting season from September to their
migration in April.
En route to the colony, guests visit the largest, privately
owned wildlife sanctuary in New Zealand which is also
home to a wide range of endangered species, including
Kiwi. The journey to the colony is a fascinating voyage
of discovery as you stop along the way to see the
sights and sounds of the Hawke’s Bay. Travelling in air-
conditioned 4WD vehicles, knowledgable guides provide
an informative and fun commentary on the history,
geology, legends, wildlife and people of the Hawke’s
Bay. On arrival at the colony, get within metres of the
gannet plateau, providing an extraordinary degree of
proximity to these remarkable birds. Because you’re
able to get so close, no walking is required, making this
truly wonderful and accessible experience for everyone.
