GLAMPING VENTURE HELPS SAVE A CAMBODIAN RAINFOREST
A new tented camp in the Cardamom Mountains of southwest
Cambodia has the tagline: “Your Stay Keeps the Forest Standing”.
Guests staying at the Cardamom Tented Camp in Botum Sakor
National Park will be sustaining a conservation-friendly business
set up to help keep an 18,000-hectare nature conservation
concession out of the hands of loggers, poachers and sand mining
operations.
Managed by Cambodian-based wildlife rescue and forest
conservation organisations, the concession includes diverse
habitats including seaside mangroves, lowland tropical forests
and hill forests. Asian elephants, clouded leopards, sun bears,
mouse deer, Asian wild dogs and pangolins all rely on the mature
forest habitat around the camp.
Guests at the new lodge on the Preak Tachan river will be able to take
guided day hikes and river trips with local rangers. They will also be
able to undertake tree planting and other conservation activities.
The Cardamom Tented Camp will soft-open on 1 September 2017 with
nine comfortable, furnished tented accommodations, each with an
en-suite bathroom and a large patio area. The camp, with a riverside
restaurant, is off-grid and largely powered by solar panels.
It can be reached by road from Phnom Penh. Trat airport and Koh
Chang Island in Thailand are less than a four-hour drive away.
EXPERIENCE EUROPE AND THE WORLD AT WALKING PACE
For an authentic experience of a place, there’s nothing like seeing it
on foot. For more than 27 years, Auckland-based A Walker’s World
has been making travellers’ experiences even richer with a selection
of independent (self-guided) and guided walking holidays in Europe,
South and Central America, India and Africa.
A Walker’s World specialises in journeys that take travellers to the
world’s backyard, where local people go about their daily routines
as they have done for centuries. Regions are chosen for their
outstanding history, culture, natural beauty and gastronomy and
itineraries often follow centuries-old pathways where you see, hear
and smell the uniqueness of life in that part of the world.
A Walker’s World tour is typically seven to 10 days long, although
some self-guided tours such as the Camino Portugués pilgrimage
route in Portugal can extend to a month. Tours allow travellers to set
their own pace, with luggage being moved on to the next stop during
the day’s walk. Accommodation is in typical hotels, often family-run,
that are spaced a day’s walk apart.
New from A Walker’s World are appetising new walks in the Costa
Brava of Spain, the Italian Lakes, the Alsace wine route and guided
walking safaris in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park. The
experienced consultants at A Walker’s World can also tailor-make
trips for solo travellers and private groups.
