TIWI CULTURAL EXPERIENCE
Explore the unique modern day Aboriginal community of
Nguiu on the Tiwi Islands. Learn some of the complex
rituals associated with the Pukamani (burial ceremony)
before returning to Darwin. In the morning take a two
hour cruise aboard the Tiwi Mantawi over to Bathurst
Island. Meet with your local guide and be taken on a
journey through the progressive, modern day Aboriginal
community of Nguiu.
Visit the museum and explore the interesting displays
of traditional art and depictions of the Tiwi ‘dreamtime’
stories. Spend time with some Tiwi ladies while they
work on their weaving and painting. Your guide and
the ladies will also demonstrate their totem dances
and perform a smoking ceremony to bless the visitors.
Sample local billy tea and damper with your included
lunch. Walk through the arts and crafts centres
and see where the artists work. You’ll also have the

TIWI ISLANDS BY DESIGN
On arrival at Bathurst Island, meet your Tiwi guide for
the short walk to Tiwi Design Art Centre for a traditional
‘Welcome to Country’ ceremony and morning tea. Stroll
to the Patakijiyali Museum where you will learn about
the culture and history of the Tiwi People. Visit the
historic Mission Precinct then return to the art centre
for lunch and an exclusive ‘behind-the-scenes’ screen
printing experience with Tiwi artists. This tour gives you
the unique opportunity to create your own Tiwi style
art piece – a t-shirt, tea towel or length of fabric to take
home with you as a special memento.
This is a leisurely paced tour on ‘Tiwi Time’. You will
have the opportunity to purchase unique and traditional
Tiwi artworks including paintings, fabrics, carving,
pottery and clothing at island prices.
The tour departs Cullen Bay at 8am and returns to
Cullen Bay at 5:45pm.
