AIRLINE UPDATE 39
AIR NEW ZEALAND WASTE
REDUCTION ACCELERATES
Project Green, Air New Zealand’s latest initiative to reduce in-
flight waste, has already seen more than 132 tonnes diverted
from landfill – the equivalent weight of three of the airline’s
A320 aircraft. Forty in-flight products including plastic cups,
sugar sticks, paper cups and paper cup lids are now being
reused or recycled rather than going to landfill.
Project Green was launched in August last year along with the
airline’s catering partner LSG Sky Chefs and the Ministry for
Primary Industries (MPI). The project focuses on in-flight waste
from international services arriving in Auckland, with a goal to
divert 150 tonnes of waste from landfill annually.
Project Green is one of many initiatives that Air New Zealand
has in place to reduce waste, including programmes in place
to tackle organic waste from office spaces, and repurposing
office materials and lounge furniture and blankets.
