HELL’S GATE
Witness a land born of myth and legend where
Rua¯umoko – god of earthquakes, volcanoes and
seasons – heats the Earth from a world below, boiling
mud and billowing steam into the air above. Journey
through native bush that opens up into geothermal
landscapes, and bathe in mud and sulphur pools that
revitalise mind, body and soul.
A short drive from Rotorua’s city centre, Hell’s Gate
is situated on a geothermal reserve rich with history
and cultural significance. Nearly 800 years ago, Maori
warriors would come to bathe their tired bodies after
battle, recognising the healing properties of the muds
and waters which flow through the area. The reserve
now contains walking tracks where visitors can see
boiling mud, billowing steam and beautiful native bush.
There is also a spa facility where guests can bathe in
the nutrient-rich waters and safely cover themselves
from head to toe in the world famous mud. Guests can
do all of this, as well as Maori carving alongside one
of the resident carvers, as part of the popular Excite
Experience package.
Experience New Zealand’s most active geothermal
reserve and mud spa as it excites and soothes, just as
it has done for centuries.
