Getting Married in Fiji

Imagine a beautiful day, a choir of the sweetest voices, exotic tropical blooms and their alluring scents, the softness of a late afternoon sun, white sandy beaches and a crystal clear sea with the perfect blend of generous Fijian hospitality. With soaring popularity of Fiji as a wedding destination, many of the resorts now offer fully arranged ‘no worry’ weddings or renewal of vows, complete with a ceremony, reception and the perfect spot to spend a honeymoon. Packages vary and there are many options to suit all budgets. 


What you need

Overseas visitors intending to get married in Fiji are required by law to obtain and sign a marriage license from the nearest marriage registry prior to the marriage ceremony with an average of 36 hours in advance.

  • Original or certified copy of birth certificates
  • Valid Passports (with valid visitors permit)
  • Decree Absolute documents (divorce papers) if relevant
  • Death certificate of deceased former spouse (if relevant)
  • Confirmatory letter on current marital status to be obtained from marriage registry where the application resides or statutory declaration signed by a Justice of Peace or Notary Public or Solicitor to prove that he/she has not entered into marriage before (this declaration applies to first or second marriage).
  • A certificate of Single Status or certificate of no Legal Impediment must be produced if:
    • Marriage between a Fiji citizen and a foreign citizen
    • Marriage by former citizens of Fiji
    • Marriage between foreign citizens residing in Fiji
  • Names of witnesses must be 18 years of age, or over.

Eligibility to get Married

  • Both spouses must be at least 18 years of age, or over.

Marriage Fees

Current marriage fees are shown here below in Fijian currency. Payment should be made in cash or postal money order made payable to the Registrar General.

  • Application for special license – F$20.70
  • Marriage officiated in the Registry (including normal standard Marriage Certificate) – F$23.00
  • Marriage officiated by the Registrar or District Registrar after official working hours and outside the Registry Office (eg in a resort) – F$31.40 (Working hours are from 8am to 3pm Monday to Friday and closed on the weekends and public holidays)
  • Notice of intention to marry – F$5.80
  • Traditional Fijian designed Wedding Certificate – F$15.70
  • Standard Certificate – F$5.80
