TRAVEL ADVISORY UPDATE

Travel Advisory Update: Middle East

Last updated: 22 June 2026

There’s positive news for travellers heading through the Middle East. SafeTravel has lowered its advisory for several Gulf destinations — including the United Arab Emirates (Dubai and Abu Dhabi), Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait - to Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution.

This reflects improving conditions across the region, along with the return of key airline routes through major hubs like Dubai and Doha.

What This Means for Travellers

Travel to and through these destinations is now possible again, with a little extra care. While conditions have improved, it’s still important to be mindful that:

  • The situation can change, so staying aware of your surroundings is key
  • Flight schedules or routes may shift at short notice
  • Occasional delays or disruptions may still occur

SafeTravel recommends all New Zealand travellers remain vigilant, keep up to date with local developments, and follow guidance from local authorities.

Transiting Through the Middle East

Major hubs like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha are back in operation, reconnecting popular routes between New Zealand, Europe and beyond.

If you’re travelling through the region:

  • Keep an eye on your flight status
  • Allow a little extra time for connections
  • Stay updated before you travel

Where Extra Caution Still Applies

Some destinations remain at Level 4: Do Not Travel, including:

  • Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories
  • Iran, Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and Yemen

These areas continue to experience high levels of risk, with ongoing conflict and limited support available to travellers.

For anyone planning a trip to the UK, here is what you need to know (especially those with dual passports):

All British and Irish citizens DO NOT require an ETA, however, travellers MUST enter using a valid British or Irish passport.

Dual citizens– As a dual national travelling into the UK on a foreign passport (e.g. New Zealand passport but born in the UK or eligible for British Citizenship) you can travel to the UK using either:

• A certificate of entitlement

You can apply for a passport or certificate of entitlement if you need one.

Renew your passport early if required – If you have a British or Irish passport nearing expiry, please get in early to avoid delays.
