World Journeys | Xi'an Snapshot

Xi’an was one of the cradles of Chinese civilisation and the beginning point of the ‘Old Silk Road’. Rich in history and culture, the historic old quarter of the city is surrounded by a 14km long city wall, one of the best preserved anywhere.

Most visitors come to Xi’an to see the incredible 2,000 year old buried army of Terracotta Warriors. We have also included an award winning Tang Dynasty show one evening during your stay.

  • Itinerary

    Day 1: Xi’an
Upon arriving in Xi’an, you will be met and transferred to your hotel located inside the old city walls. The remainder of the day is at leisure until your evening transfer to to the Tang Dynasty Palace, a leading theatre and restaurant, where a dumpling dinner will be served while you watch the Tang Dynasty Show. The show is based on various historical records and ancient arts and relics from the time of Chang’an, as Xi’an was known when it was the capital during the Tang dynasty. It is a culturally rich evening, with musicians using instruments styled from the Tang dynasty era and dancers wearing traditional robes during the performances.

    Day 2: Xi’an
The highlight of any visit to China must be the awe-inspiring Terracotta Warriors, one of the most significant archeological finds of the 20th century. This morning you will be taken to see the 6,000 intricately-carved, life-size clay statues of terracotta warriors and their horses as they stand in battle formation, protecting the mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor in Chinese history, for over 2,200 years. Afterwards, continue to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, regarded by many as a symbol of the city. The pagoda was built in 652 AD to house the sutras brought back from India by Xuanzang, a Chinese Buddhist monk famous for his travels in the early Tang dynasty.

    Day 3: Xi’an
After breakfast, you will tour Xi’an’s ancient Bell Tower, a three-storey wooden and brick structure built in 1384 and relocated in 1582 to the centre of the city. The replica “JingYun” bell hangs in the tower today, while the original, cast in the Tang dynasty, is on display in Dongting. Afterwards take a short walk on the Ancient City Walls, one of the oldest and best preserved walls in China, which are wide enough to carry a golf cart or rickshaw. You will then be taken to visit the Shaanxi History Museum, one of the largest and most comprehensive museums in China. The museum was opened in 1991, exhibiting over 3,000 unearthed historical relics, a mere fraction of their entire collection of over 370,000 items.

At the end of the tour, you will be transferred to the airport for your onward flight (departure after 3.00 pm).

    Notes:
Entry into the Bell Tower is not recommended if you find it difficult to climb a large number of stairs, especially as some are very narrow. It will be possible for you to view the tower from the outside only.

The Shaanxi History Museum is closed on Mondays. Depending on your day of arrival in Xi’an, the order of sightseeing may need to be changed.
