Bali: A Food Lover’s Dream
14 December 2023, by Jessica Lake

Bali is a dream destination for food enthusiasts, offering a vibrant culinary scene that blends traditional Indonesian flavors, fresh local ingredients, and global influences. From authentic Balinese dishes to trendy cafés and local markets, the island’s food culture is as diverse as its landscape.
How to Explore Bali’s Food Scene
During my two months on Bali in 2023, I embraced its culinary wonderland with every delight, and despite what the rumours may tell you, I didn’t once succumbe to Bali belly! Beginning in Ubud, surrounded by lush green rice fields and forests, I explored the island on foot or by using Grab, Bali’s go-to app for scooters and food delivery. Riding on the back of a scooter driven by a local expert is both affordable and efficient—perfect for solo travelers or pairs. Families can opt for Grab’s van service for convenience.
A Culinary Journey to Remember
Bali’s food scene is a feast for the senses, offering everything from refined dining to street-side delights. Whether you’re indulging in smoky BBQ, savoring plant-based creations, or discovering local markets, Bali promises an unforgettable gastronomic adventure.
Discover Bali’s Local Markets
For an authentic taste of Bali, head to the bustling local markets. Pick up fresh ingredients for a villa-cooked meal or enjoy snacks and traditional dishes prepared on the spot. Don’t miss the chance to try frybread—a hidden gem of Bali’s street food culture.

Reina Jungla: If you want to feel like you are getting lost in the jungle whilst enjoying one of the most amazing croissants on Bali, then head to Reina Jungla. You know the food is good when you have to order second breakfast even though you are full.
Donna: For a touch of elegance, this fusion restaurant offers incredible cocktails and dishes, including New Zealand lamb you will find cheaper than back home. Book in advance for a poolside table.
