Experience Dubai Like a Local

When you think of Dubai, it’s easy to imagine the glittering skyline, luxurious malls, and extravagant hotels. But beyond the iconic landmarks lies a whole other side to Dubai that many visitors miss. I recently spent some time exploring the city like a local, and it was an enriching experience.

From horseback riding in the desert to savouring authentic Palestinian cuisine, here’s how you can discover the real Dubai.

Horse Riding at Sahara Stables

Picture yourself galloping (or walking, if you’re a beginner!) across glistening dunes as the afternoon sun lights up the sand with a gorgeous sunset in view—it’s a scene straight out of a film. The peace and beauty of the desert here are absolutely unmatched.

If you love horses or simply want to try something unique, Sahara Stables is the perfect place to start. Located just outside the city, these stables offer an authentic desert riding experience. Many locals keep their horses here and ride regularly, so it is a great opportunity to meet the locals.

A Day of Adventure at Hatta

For an unforgettable day out, head to Hatta, nestled in the stunning Hajar Mountains. It’s a popular spot for locals, and it’s easy to see why. From kayaking on the serene reservoir to mountain biking or hiking trails with breathtaking views, there’s plenty to do. But the real highlight for me was stopping at the Emirati restaurant Tanoor. They make their own ghee in-house, with varying levels of caramelisation—it’s incredible! The rich, buttery flavours elevate every dish, making this a foodie’s dream stop. These bottles are available for sale and I am still regretting my decision not to purchase one!

Thrilling Dune Bashing with a Local

Of course, you can’t visit Dubai without a dune bashing adventure. While I had the unique opportunity to go with a local who knew the desert like the back of their hand, most travellers will need to book this as a guided tour. Many operators offer small-group or private experiences, ensuring you still get that authentic thrill. Flying over the dunes in a 4x4 is an adrenaline-pumping activity that will have you grinning from ear to ear. It’s an absolute must for anyone seeking a taste of Dubai’s wild, adventurous side.

Relaxing at Kite Beach and Beach Clubs

For a more chilled-out day, head to Kite Beach, a local favourite. It’s a fantastic spot for paddleboarding, kitesurfing, or just soaking up the sun. You will find an array of wellness experiences close by. I was lucky enough to experience the most incredible session at Flow of Life with their Founder, Florine. We did a breathwork and ice bath session using the Wim Hof Method (she is a Certified Wim Hof Method Instructor) and it made me absolutely fall so in love with a cold plunge, that after this trip I even have confidence to take a dip in our New Zealand rivers and oceans during winter time.

If you’re after something a bit more luxurious, Dubai’s beach clubs offer plush loungers, excellent food, and a laid-back vibe with stunning sea views. Whether you’re after action or relaxation, the beach scene here won’t disappoint.

Exploring Dubai’s Vibrant Food Scene: A Middle Eastern Culinary Journey

No trip to Dubai is complete without delving into its extraordinary and diverse food scene. While many of us in New Zealand are accustomed to a more generalised presentation of Middle Eastern cuisine, Dubai offers a deeper dive, showcasing the unique flavours, ingredients, and traditions of individual countries across the region.

One standout culinary experience was at Mama’esh, a charming Palestinian restaurant brimming with authentic flavours. Their lemon chicken was nothing short of a revelation—perfectly tender, infused with zesty citrus, and bursting with bold flavours that lingered long after the meal was over.

For food lovers, Mama’esh is an absolute must-visit. Beyond the incredible dishes, it’s an opportunity to explore the rich culinary heritage of Palestine in an atmosphere that feels warm, welcoming, and full of soul. Whether you’re a seasoned foodie or just beginning to explore Middle Eastern cuisine, this spot deserves a place at the very top of your Dubai dining list.

A Perfect Day Trip to Abu Dhabi: Art, Seafood, and Culture

A day trip to Abu Dhabi is an unforgettable experience and a great addition to any UAE itinerary. If time allows, consider spending a few nights to fully explore its rich cultural and architectural highlights.

The main highlight of my trip was the Louvre Abu Dhabi, an absolute masterpiece of design and curation. The museum’s iconic dome creates enchanting light displays, and its world-class exhibits blend Eastern and Western art seamlessly, making it a must-see for art lovers.

Before visiting the museum, I stopped for lunch at the Al Mina Fish Market at a restaurant called Al Shader. Abu Dhabi’s fish markets outshine Dubai’s with their variety and vibrancy, and Al Shader is a gem for fresh seafood. Be sure to ask for the prawns—they weren’t listed on the menu but were freshly available, and they were delicious!

Although my day trip was packed, I missed some of Abu Dhabi’s other incredible attractions. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a marvel of intricate Islamic design, and Qasr Al Watan (Presidential Palace) offers a glimpse into the UAE’s history and grandeur. Thrill-seekers can head to Yas Island, home to Ferrari World and Yas Marina Circuit. For a cultural touch, visit the Abu Dhabi Heritage Village or enjoy a leisurely stroll along the Corniche, a waterfront promenade offering stunning views and relaxing vibes.

If your schedule allows, extending your stay ensures you experience the best of Abu Dhabi—from cutting-edge architecture to authentic local culture.

See Dubai Differently

Exploring Dubai like a local gave me a whole new appreciation for the city. From the serene desert and mountain adventures to meaningful cultural experiences and incredible food, there’s so much more to Dubai than the glamour and glitz. Whether you’re planning your first visit or returning for another trip, I highly recommend stepping off the beaten path and seeing this vibrant city from a fresh perspective.

Have you tried any of these experiences, or do you have your own tips for exploring Dubai like a local? Share your thoughts—I’d love to hear them!
